Climate Action: Reduce Your Food Waste By Carrie Tai, co-founder of Neighbours for the Planet.

1 min to read

Are you looking for a relatively easy way to help reduce your carbon emissions in the kitchen without changing what you eat?   And even save money at the same time?  Then read on.

According to Love Food Hate Waste one third of all food produced globally is wasted!  This food waste results in about 4.4 gigatonnes of carbon emissions annually.   The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations   says it best “To put this in perspective, if food loss and waste were its own country, it would be the world’s third-largest GHG emitter – surpassed only by China and the United States.”

But what can we do in our homes?  A study done in 2017 by The National Zero Waste Council indicated that in Canadian households, we throw out about 2/3 of foods that could have been eaten costing the average Canadian family $1,100 annually.

Following are some easy tips to help reduce your food waste, save you money and help tackle the climate crisis we are in.

  1. Plan your meals for the week and only buy what you need and in the quantities you need
  2. Buy frozen when you can
  3. Eat leftovers
  4. Store foods properly to help maintain their freshness.  Check out this article from Goodhousekeeping for fridge storage tips.
  5. Save food that is almost expired by freezing, baking or cooking them, or make smoothies or soups.

And if you do have to throw food out, ensure you compost it in your green bin if that is an option.

Do you want to save even more money?  Well there’s an app for that!  Flashfood  teams up with grocery stores to minimize their food waste.  Foods that are usually thrown out due to their impending best before date are now being discounted at 50% off up to 2 weeks from their best before date.  Flashfood has created an app that alerts shoppers of these discounts.  This is a win-win-win.  A win for the retailer who is now making money on food they used to discard; a win for customers who are purchasing food at a reduced price; and a big win for our planet!

Reducing our carbon emissions and helping tackle climate change does not have to be costly or painful.  In fact it can even save us money.

We can make a huge impact to our planet by working together to reduce our food waste!
